The Landmannalaugar hot spring site is without doubt one of the most beautiful and popular tourist attractions in Iceland. The site is reasonably accessible in the summer and there are quite good summer roads leading to it. Environment and landscape in the Landmannalaugar area are marked primarily by high, imposing mountains and the rich colouration typical of rhyolite areas. There is considerable geothermal heat in the area. The hot springs themselves are situated under the high rim of the Laugahraun lava field. Running down from the lava field are hot springs and cold, meeting in a hot, gentle stream where swimming and bathing are popular. There is a fine cabin for tourists at Landmannalaugar as well as a campsite. Several familiar footpaths lead away from Landmannalaugar. These include the Laugavegur pass (between Landmannalaugar and the Ţórsmörk region) and many other footpaths in the immediate vicinity of the Landmannalaugar area.
